Young carers look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse. Some of the children may support a parent with a physical disability or mental health problems. Others will play a significant role in caring as part of a family where one of their siblings has special needs.

They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities normally expected of an adult.
